Will our mobiles work? Vodafone and O2 are usually OK. Orange and T Mobile don’t work at the house but have a patchy signal elsewhere on the island.
What about Internet access? There’s no fixed broadband at the house, but if you are on Vodafone or O2 you should be able to get online via your smartphone or other mobile broadband device. Otherwise, it’s a short walk to The Antlers, which is likely to re-open in 2012 and has free wi-fi for customers, as does the Jura Hotel. The Jura Service Point also has free wi-fi, and PCs with public internet access
Do we need to bring a car? A car is useful but not absolutely essential. The village shop, hotel etc are within five minutes walk. There is a limited but reliable bus service, and there is bike hire locally. See the ‘Getting there’ page for car hire on Islay, which can be a cost-effective alternative to taking a car on the Calmac ferry.
Do we need to book ferries in advance? If you plan to bring a car you should book the Calmac ferry to Islay well in advance - it does get fully booked at peak times. The ‘wee ferry’ from Islay to Jura is not bookable, however.
What about food and drink shopping? If you’re bringing a car, it’s best to stock up on the mainland, and then top up supplies at the Jura Stores or on Islay as necessary. The Co-op supermarket at Lochgilphead is convenient for en route shopping. It’s open from 07.00 until 22.00 Monday to Saturday, 08.00 - 19.00 Sundays.
Are there any decent beaches? Will this do?
Is it OK to bring the dog? We love dogs (we’ve got one ourselves) and dogs love Jura! So a well-behaved dog is welcome, as long it stays downstairs and off the furniture. However, because of the extra cleaning we charge an extra £20 for a dog.
